Modernising a Legacy Token-Based Driving Range System

The Challenge

Noosa Springs Golf & Spa Resort was operating a traditional token-only ball dispensing system. Members and guests could pre-purchase range credits, which were manually managed using handwritten card balances, and exchange credits for tokens.

This legacy process presented several limitations:

  • Manual tracking of prepaid ball credits
  • Physical token handling and distribution
  • Single basket size dispensing
  • Risk of lost or incorrectly adjusted ball-credit cards
  • No real-time visibility of member balances
  • No real-time visibility of overall ball credit liability
  • No integration with the Club’s membership system

The Club sought a modern, secure and flexible solution that would streamline operations while improving the member and guest experience.

The Solution

Noosa Springs upgraded to Range Manager via a retrofit installation that included:

  • Range Manager touchscreen hardware
  • Integrated QR and RFID reader
  • Unattended payment terminal for at-dispenser credit card purchases
  • Integration with MiMembership (Club membership software)

The retrofit was able to be performed entirely onsite.  The approach allowed Noosa Springs to modernise its dispenser infrastructure without complete system replacement, delivering a cost-effective transformation.

Seamless Credit Migration

Members and non-members previously holding prepaid ball credits had their balances:

  1. Transferred into a spreadsheet
  2. Imported directly into Range Manager as digital ball credits

Each member was allocated their ball balance within the system.

Now, when logging in at the dispenser, users can clearly see their remaining ball balance in real time.

From Tokens to Flexible Ball Balances

Under the legacy system:

  • Members exchanged a deduction on their handwritten card for physical tokens
  • Each token dispensed a single, fixed-size basket

With Range Manager:

  • Credits are managed as ball quantities, not tokens
  • Users can select from multiple basket sizes
  • The system automatically deducts the correct number of balls per dispense

This shift provides greater flexibility for users while eliminating the operational burden of token handling, manual account adjustments, and the cost of tokens distributed but unused.

Secure & Convenient Access

Range Manager introduced modern, secure access methods:

For Members

  • Encouraged to download the Range Manager Web App
  • App generates a dynamic QR code
  • QR code scanned directly at the dispenser touchscreen
  • Secure login with real-time balance display
  • With the member uniquely identified, secure purchase from their Club membership account balance is enabled.

For Non-Members & Casual Guests

  • Also encouraged to download the Range Manager Web App, or
  • Temporary dynamic QR codes issued by the Golf Shop
  • Delivered via:
    • Printed QR slip
    • SMS
    • Email
  • QR codes expire within x minutes, ensuring enhanced security, or
  • Ad hoc purchase at guest rates immediately at the dispenser

Unlike static barcodes, dynamic QR codes significantly reduce misuse or credential sharing.

Integrated Member Account Payments

Range Manager was interfaced directly with MiMembership, allowing:

  • Members to purchase range balls using funds held within their club account
  • Seamless account-based transactions in real-time
  • Elimination of manual reconciliation processes

Members can now choose between:

  • Using prepaid ball credits
  • Charging purchases to their membership account
  • Paying by credit card at the dispenser
